Grand Prairie joins 91 other Texas cities as a certified Scenic City, adding this prestigious designation to its array of awards, certifications, designations, and rankings.  The award was announced Oct. 6 at the Scenic City Annual Awards Reception in conjunction with the Texas Municipal League Annual Conference in San Antonio.

“Grand Prairie is delighted to achieve this prestigious designation,” said Mayor Ron Jensen.  “We have wonderful public spaces and work hard daily to be the best Grand Prairie possible in appearance, community, unity, relationships and customer service.  We are so proud of the work done by our employees everyday as we serve the citizens and businesses of Grand Prairie.”

The mission of the Scenic City Certification Program is to support and recognize Texas municipalities that implement high-quality scenic standards for public spaces. The Scenic City Certification Program provides a proven, highly regarded tool to Texas cities for assessment, evaluation, and recognition of infrastructure standards.  The evaluation reviews every applicant’s existing ordinance and code language in these areas:

  • Streetscape enhancement
  • Parks, trails and open space
  • Lighting Standards
  • Design integrity
  • Landscaping
  • Sign control
  • Litter and graffiti prohibition
  • Utility and cable line programs
  • Dumpster screening
  • Unique municipal feature and special programs

The Scenic City Certification Program (SCCP) was developed and implemented to establish a foundation of cohesive scenic standards and land planning practices that advance sustainability through environmental conservation, ecosystem management, and environmental education. The SCCP provides city leaders and members of the community with innovative tools and educational resources used for the development, implementation, and evaluation of landscaping plans and infrastructure standards. The SCCP is used to maintain and enhance ecologically sensitive areas, shared community spaces, parks, walkable sidewalks, and the scenic roads that connect all Texans.
